BLUESCAN
Bluescan is a special school project in collaboration with Thales Underwater System. The goal was to create a mobile game that could help people understand anti-submarine defense and that shows the role of the Thales products in this domain. We had to make a game for two different types of players: the casual player who doesn't know much about anti-submarine defense and the expert who plays the game during a professional convention.
The game is not a simulation. It does not precisely show how each specific equipment works. Our goal was to give a first understanding of anti-submarine defense for curious people and still have the fundamental dynamics so a professional can see where the Thales products act.
Also, the game is all about detection and intel. There is no actual fight as the goal of the game is only to detect a foreign submarine, not destroy it. This objective was set to have a game that represents the current reality, where submarines are all about espionage in times of peace.

In this project, I was Game Designer in a team of 19 people that worked on the game for 5 months.
I had two main tasks: writing the Game Design Documentation for the rest of the team, and working on the design of the different actors that the player controls. Those actors were: the ship, the plane and the helicopter.

To design those actors, we tried to be as close as possible from the real examples used by french navy.

The ship is slow, but it can detect any object hidden in the sea. However it cannot identify them, so these objects are marked by points that can be seen on the map.

The plane is much faster and is not annoyed by land. Its goal is to go to the detected points and identify them. It can also drop buoys to keep a constant eye on some places in its absence.

Finally, the helicopter is the win condition of the player. it is carried by the ship and can be deployed for a limited amount of time. Its goal is to drop its special sonar on the submarine. If the player manages to achieve this, the game is won.
